Kids these days...
With constant inventions of new and exciting technology, kids of today are getting more and more lazy. It's gotten to the point where it's rare to see a kid climbing a tree or riding his bike down the street. Instead, they are inside, on the couch, playing on their computers, cell phones, or those damn DS'. My little cousin is 8 years old and just about every time I see her she is playing on one of those things. Along with her lack of exercise, and shitty McDonald's diet, she has gained so much weight in the last 2 years. It's gotten to the point where she can hardly keep up with her friends when playing and she even has a double chin. I know it sounds mean, but it's the truth. Yeah I was kind of chubby when I was a kid, but I was always running around outside with my friends and all the other kids in the neighborhood. We skated, played ball, played hide and seek, and were always getting into trouble. We weren't inside on the computer or watching tv, we were out having fun and living the normal life of a child. So what I'm trying to say here is that kids today need to get out more. Even if it's just an hour a day, kids need to get out, run around, and stretch their legs. Otherwise, every kid in America is going to end up like my cousin and even worse like the 1000s of obese kids in our country. I'll admit, I love my technology, but there's nothing better than giong to Macnaughton park up the road and taking a good hike. =]

first off great music on the page! and your right kids today just do not wanna be outside. I used to live with my grandparents and my sister and I were expected to be outside from after breakfast till dinnertime ,we came back in 2 eat lunch. But i ve asked my little brother to come play football or ride bikes with me and all he says is hes too tired. He is 12 years old 5'4 and weighs 160 lbs, meaning my little brother who is 7 years younger then me weighs 20 lbs more then I do. I am kinda starting to wonder what has shifted in American culture, when did we loose the drive to just be outside and play, and will it ever come back?
ReplyDeleteI think a big part of this problem is the fact that many parents don't encourage their kids to play outside. Some are too afraid that their kids will hate them for making them get off the computer for an hour, heaven forbid, or some just simply don't care what their kids do. Seriously, is it that hard to go out and play catch with your kid every now and then? Unfortunately, this problem probably won't ever get solved because of the rapid increase in technology and too many parents wanting to be friends with their kids instead of actual parents.
ReplyDeleteIt is actually kind of sad to see kids become overweight at such a young age. I totally believe it is from all of those video games and such that they have now. To go along with what Joe said i remember back in the day when i was little I would play with my neighbors until dinner time and then go right back outside until it was dark. The other week I had heard that the kids channel nickelodeon had gone off the air for like 3 hours encouraging kids to go outside and play. I thought this was a really cool idea Im just glad to see that people are finally realizing the importance of exercise and staying healthy.
ReplyDeleteExcellent topic, Jordan. What we're losing is the ability to PLAY. Think about how everything is organized today: organized sports, every organized play in the form of "play dates." Because kids are constantly looking for stimuli outside of themselves, they are unable to be inside their own heads. I think the effect this will have on a generation of thinkers is substantial. Also, the health concerns are overwhelming.
